The first Wrangler automobile was similar to Jeep Cj-7, which is renowned for its robust body structure, made its debut at the 1986 Chicago Auto Show. Although the Wrangler YJ discontinued the design in 1987, but share the same wheelbase, as well as their front and rear axles. The new car had a more full track, slightly less ground clearance, more comfort, and improved handling.
